What Is Cellulite?
Cellulite is made up of fatty deposits trapped in pockets just below the skin. As a result, the fat cells are squeezed into small bulges that give the skin that unsightly lumpy, dimpled or “orange peel” look. Newly emerging scientific evidence by ultrasonic imaging of the thigh reveals that one of the major causes of cellulite is inflammation.
What Causes Cellulite?
There are many factors that contribute to cellulite. Some of them include genetics, the type of skin you have, your age – and your level of body fat. Poor blood circulation and fluid retention can also transform the subcutaneous fat cells into cellulite. Contributing factors are poor diet, lack of exercise, smoking and excessive alcohol.
Estrogen also plays an important role in determining the level of fat cells in the body. For example, a surge of hormones during pregnancy can lead to cellulite. Cellulite can affect any age and any size. It is a predominantly women’s problem. Located mainly, but not exclusively, on the hips, thighs, buttocks and abdomen. Cellulite affects approximately 90% of women. Other hormones believed to promote cellulite are insulin, the catecholamines adrenaline and noradrenaline, thyroid hormones, and prolacti.
Because hormones play a large part in the formation of cellulite, most women notice that their cellulite started around puberty and got worse after having children. You don’t have to be overweight to have cellulite, however more often than not, cellulite will be present if you are carrying extra weight; and because of the hormonal influence, cellulite can be resistant to exercise and diet.
The Nurnberger – Muller scale can be used to classify cellulite based on a four-stage:
- Stage 0 – No dimpling when the subject is standing and lying. The pinch test reveals “folds and furrows”, but there is no mattress-like appearance
- Stage 1 – No dimpling while the subject is standing or lying, but the pinch test reveals the mattress-like appearance
- Stage 2 – Dimpling appears spontaneously when standing and not lying down
- Stage 3 – Dimpling is spontaneously positive standing and lying down.
